How to Lie Honestly

Really enjoying the chapter on Statistics in our bed-time read, Math with bad Drawings by Ben Orlin, who approaches the subject in the most profound and at the same time most entertaining way possible. We have calculated, that if we consider our respective ages as our data set (that is, the ages of the three of us reading the book: 9, 11 and 41), the mean would be just over 20 and the standard deviation just over 14. Just think about it. This is how little thinking in averages represents reality. Because in reality, we don’t have any mean people down here 😉

Below are some formulas Simon came up with on his own, inspired by the book:

the method to calculate variance on page 211; take the square root of that to find out the standard deviation.
